A look back at SIA Powertrain 2024

Julien Jourdan attended the 2024 edition of the SIA Powertrain show in Lille on June 19 and 20. He gives you a summary below.

Unfortunately, impossible for me to give a resume of all the conferences, too much to see and too much to say! But, below you’ll find some highlights of these 2 days (19-20 June).

This year, SIA Powertrain was inspired by all the cycle of life around the reduction of CO2: technologies (fuel cell, e-ICE, battery…), human resources (skills, school…)…

Three interests on this event:

  • Conferences,
  • Booth,
  • Test drives

Let’s talk on this.

About test drives: thank you so much to Sylvain Roquet (Valeo) to let us try the 308 with a 48V battery added, very impressive and also to Mario A. Vondracek (Schaeffler) for this amazing electric bicycle!

About booth: a lot of competencies of course with very interesting discussion with application engineers (HIL, MBD, tests, fuelcell battery…) – AVL, Vector, dSPACE, Mathworks and so many others.

And of course, about conferences:

  • Frédéric Charon (SIA) – introduction: we all have a Paul (private joke during this event)! I had one coming at this event seat next to me in the train while we were talking about our job and the reason of the travel… so many technologies to explain and possibilities of uses to have a simple answer,
  • Yann Pitollet (Nord France invest): EV Ecosystem in North of France with a lot of investments in this area with construction of giga factories –> the European giga valley,
  • Panel session Aria, ACC, LGG, Verkor: batteries change the automotive industry from a hardware process to a pharmaceutical process –> need a lot of skills also from outside the automotive industry, so we have to become attractive again,
  • Francis Roy (Stellantis) and Thomas Peuchant (Saft): AC battery prototype for EV and stationary markets –> a new technology and a new way to design batteries: good conversion efficiency, affordable, reliablity, dynamic cluster balancing…
  • Christian Vigild (Ford) – game changer in fleet monitoring: the car is more and more connected thanks to IoT and this lead to a lot of data to analyse. Presentation of assist-iot, EU funded project –> data logging for diagnostics (it reminds me our projects on powertrain diagnostic), ISC testing procedure and fleet in-service conformity verification… to insure conformity during the life of the vehicles… NOx sensor, EGR valve, battery status…
  • Cyril Bourguignon (Stellantis) – automotive evolution & global change: roadmap for each brand –> -50% vs 2021 to 2030 carbon footprint for Stellantis, electrification, supplier efficiency, vehicles plateform, green materials, circular economy (repair, reman, reuse, recycle),
  • Thomas Morel (McKinsey & Company) – perspective on future powertrain and zoom on EV latest design trends: total market for eMotors is growing, BEV architecture regarding how they are used (1 motor: Tesla Model 3 – lowest cost; 2 motors: Tesla or Volkswagen with 4WD and 3+ motors: Hummer for highest performance…),
  • Mario A. Vondracek (Schaeffler) – innovative series hybrid drivetrain: very interesting demo with the bicycle, and explanation of how they use simulation to identify and correct NVH issues,
  • Javier Gazzarri (Mathworks) – novel way to parameterize battery cell models: Matlab and toolboxes to help to model, simulate and calculate parameters, presentation of a new method that help by reducing calculation time, from 2.5h for a model to less than 1 min, to estimate all the 400 parameters…
  • Bruno Walter (Ifpen) – H2 ICE technology development for a medium-duty truck application: prototype of a diesel engine with a retrofit to hydrogen for very good results after 1500h running,
  • Kai Frederic (Zastrow) – Worldwide regulations and standards overview: with some overview on carbon footprint of vehicle from current estimation based on usage to the complete life cycle, and fleet monitoring to guarantee starting performances during many years after sell (continuous verification with online monitoring),
  • Maxime Bayon de Noyer (Ampere) – Powertrain circular economy: with the trends of different kind of technologies (conventional ICE, MHEV, PHEV, MHEV, BEV…) regarding countries and challenges (thermal, distance, performance…) and future services with BEV from basic charging to smart home or smart grid,
  • Nicolas Tourteaux (Volvo Trucks) – Sustainable powertrain for commercial vehicles: explanation about CO2 reduction targets for trucks (5t, 7,4T, 16t and more) for next years and the choices of energy solutions (electric, fuel cell…) with range,
  • and more and more others…

Next stop for SIA Powertrain : 11-12 June 2025
